For Fixed Retainers
- Brush thoroughly around the wire and bonded areas
- Use floss threaders or water flossers to clean underneath

- Avoid extremely hard or sticky foods that could damage the wire

Common Retainer Questions
How long will I need to wear retainers?
The honest answer is: indefinitely, at least on a part-time basis. Teeth have “memory” and tend to shift throughout life, even decades after orthodontic treatment. Most patients transition to nighttime-only wear after the initial full-time period.
Will I need both upper and lower retainers?
This depends on your specific treatment. Many patients require retention for both arches, while others may only need a retainer for one arch or may have a fixed retainer on the lower teeth and a removable one for the upper teeth.
What if my retainer feels tight after not wearing it for a while?
This is a sign that your teeth have started to shift. If the retainer still fits but feels tight, wear it consistently as prescribed. If the retainer no longer fits properly, contact us immediately for an evaluation.
Can I get a replacement retainer if I was treated elsewhere?
Yes! We can create new retainers even if you received your orthodontic treatment at another practice. We’ll take impressions or digital scans of your teeth in their current position to fabricate custom retainers.
How much do replacement retainers cost?
